Worthington regatta is a hot place for Zumba, food, art and more - Worthington Daily Globe

WORTHINGTON - Only some of the action at the Festival of music, pure and simple and the regatta Worthington annual windsurfing arrived on Lake Okabena.


And, in the thirteenth year of this event, one of the activities the increasingly popular taste is a class of Zumba opened, led by certified instructor America Vergara at 11 a.m. Saturday and again at 1 p.m. Sunday.


"Go, show me that you can shake," urged de Vergara, vigorously, it demonstrates the Latin dance moves at approximately 40 participants before a crowd of fun to look at under the Sun of midday on Saturday.


Several men of a certain age joined valiantly in training, Dana Larson, a passionate Zumba and 31 year old mother of three, said felt more "like a party."


In a city as diverse as Worthington, Zumba time offered a dose of culture for some and a taste of home to others.


"This is my music," breathed Sheny Benitez after a fast-paced number. "It gets moving me and I like that.".


Benitez, now a long-standing Worthington resident, was born in the Guatemala. It works at any time fitness and walking his dog regularly, but about two months ago added Benitez that Vergara s Saturday morning course Zumba to of BenLee his routine as well.

Even former teacher of Worthington Dorothy Hagemann tried a bit of Zumba after watching the smile, the participants of sweating for a while.


"I love dancing, and if Steve Dudley can do, I can do," Hagemann said.


A couple of hot Zumba dancers literally jumped in the Lake after the Saturday session, where they were in good company with toddlers dressed in underwear, children in shorts and other more traditional swimsuits.


Several participants was walking along the beach with windsurfing of large cups of lemonade fresh-pressed, discouraged in their enjoyment of the refreshing drink by the labels of price of $3 and $5.


A good number of people also tried a vendor food new Worthington - people of Kettlekorn Kastle of Crooks, S.D., who sells not only corn kettlecorn and caramel, but also hand ice cream in flavors ranging from vanilla to pina colada cake cheese to the strawberries.


"We have done this for a year, and we travel to festivals like that around the area," said Myron Scharkey. Scharkey, his wife, Carole, and a friend of the family has worked hard to keep the crowds with their treats sweet over the weekend. "We have installation kettlecorn more elite in the Midwest," Scharkey shared with pride.


The Scharkeys were impressed by the regatta of Worthington and music festival and already projects to come back next year in June and also King Turkey day in 2013.


A more discrete operation but not less enthusiastic was just across from Lake Avenue near the Nobles County Dispatch Mobile Unit, where Group youth youth of the Lutheran Church of St. Matthew, with Advisor Bill Knigge, serving lunches for the boards for sailing.


"We do this as a general fundraiser, but this year, that our group is going to Colorado and downtown Minneapolis," said Knigge. Youth Group provided chips, bananas and water with about 80 of their "famous" hoagies; they have been together for six or seven years, noted Knigge.


"Our secret ingredient is what all children wear smiles when they the hoagies", revealed Knigge.


Jewelry, sold by Gail Gruis of Fulda and the stained glass windows were among the offers of artists along the Lake over the weekend.


A seller of return, Gruis said she liked the new positioning of the tents of artisans, who were more placed near trucks stage and main food this year than before.


"It's a little hard, but there was more than traffic," it said it was among his creations of jewellery and mosaic stained, oven-fired. Gruis stand has also made crafts made of recycled glass and bottles of wine or beer.


"They can be used as spoon rests, candy or relish dishes - whatever people want, or some may be hung for decoration,"Gruis said, give suggestions for its unique items."


An outstanding piece on the stand of Gruis is a plate of glass melted on a theme of multicolor Southwest incorporating a cactus, desert flowers, birds and clouds.


"Just design came to me one day when I was doing anything," she said.


And it is with the windsurfing Regatta and Festival of music pure and simple: a popular activity in summer with a regional draw coming from what some people were "something else" - windsurfing.
